About us

Our Story

The Alliance Française was established in Paris in 1883 by eminent figures of the arts, the sciences, and politics to ensure the influence of the French language and culture around the world.

The Alliance Française of Potchefstroom was created in 1971 and is a French language and cultural
organisation in Potchefstroom. We cooperate with the French department of the North-West University (Potch campus), the larger Alliance Française group and the French Embassy.

We currently teach French courses for adults, teenagers and kids, as well as online courses during the Covid-19 lockdown.

We also organise cultural events to create an environment for French speakers to meet – such as French coffee events, film nights, concerts, exhibitions and other activities in cooperation with the NWU Potch French committee.

Marie Rubel-Goeller

Marie arrived in Potchefstroom from France to join the Alliance at the end of January 2020. She is currently in charge of the quality of our courses. In between preparing different French courses, she is also having fun with her two other colleagues, filling the Instagram and Facebook page with the ongoings at our beautiful Alliance Française.

She has a Master’s Degree in Teaching French as a Foreign Language which she obtained in France and a PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages which she did in England.

Marie also speaks English, German, and some Spanish and has decided to learn Afrikaans during her time in Potchefstroom. Since arriving in South Africa, Marie has discovered a passion for the South African braai! In fact, it was the first South African word she learned.

If you want to join classes at the Alliance, Marie is the person to contact !
